Trinity College Kandy - Old Boys’ Association News Letter

End of Michaelmas Term 2008 – (3rd Term)

The 3rd Term was from 2nd September to 11th December 2008.

Message from the President

This will be the last message I will address to you as President. I can almost “touch” the collective sigh of relief!

The last 3 years have been both challenging and rewarding. The OBA has shared with the School, both its moments of ecstasy and of deep agony. The OBA itself has had more than its moments of joy, but has not been spared its own trials and tribulations. All of these have been touched upon in our Newsletters and personal communications. The common thread that runs though this mosaic is the love of, and deep concern of all Old Boys to the “School We Handed On.”

I will leave it to you to pass judgement on the “Balance Sheet”, sincerely hoping that you will be charitable in your judgement.

The School itself faced its worst challenge in May 2008. The resolve and resilience displayed by the School is tribute to the strength, self-beliefs, and solid foundations of Trinity. The OBA welcomes Brig. Udaya Aryaratne, the Acting Principal to his Alma Mater. The Executive Committee resolved unanimously to extend its fullest co-operation to him. We wish him every success, well knowing that, his success would also be ours.

With 2 Brigadiers at the helm, the one at School, and the other as President of the OBA in February, we can look forward with confidence to a time, in the words of the Bard of Sri Lanka, Walter Senior:

“When we leap to a single Bugle, March to a single Drum”

I will be failing in my duty if I do not thank, most sincerely, the Office Bearers, all Committee members and the entire membership for their support and encouragement during my tenure, not withstanding, the occasional and sometimes persistent contentious issues raised by some. I only see these as signs of deep concern for the School. A special word of thanks, to Mr. Rohan Madena, Manager, Mr. Rasika Kulasekara, former Computer Assistant and Mr. Chandrasekaran Sivabalan Computer Assistant, for their enthusiastic and willing support at the Secretariat. They made my work easy, although I have to admit that I made life difficult for them by my demanding idiosyncrasies! I believe they have learned to live with it!

I shall end this message with all my blessings and good wishes to the Incoming President and his team as they take over the reigns. I am confident the entire membership will share these sentiments.

With compliments of the Season and all good wishes for 2009.

Dr. Neil Halpe
